Riccarton-based trainer Andrew Carston has his eye on the NZB Southern Filly of the Year Series with Wednesday’s fresh up winner Super Sincere.

The Go Racing three-year-old, who had not been seen at the races or trials for 112 days, was the impressive winner of the Speight’s Summit Ultra On Tap Maiden (1200m) at her home track on Wednesday.

Jumping from barrier eleven of thirteen with Tina Comignaghi onboard, Super Sincere was second to last as they reached the course proper but showed an impressive turn of foot to circle the field and win by three-quarters of a length.

“I think she’s a pretty good filly and I’ve always liked her,” Carston said of the Go Racing Goldilocks Syndicate-raced filly.

“She’s always shown me a lot. In fact, I loved her the first time I saw her in the Haunui Farm draft at Karaka, but I thought that she’d be too expensive to end up in my stable to be honest.

“The reason that she didn’t have a trial before the race was because I felt that if she was going to get on to the three-year-old fillies’ series we needed to get her preparation underway now.”

Super Sincrere had three starts as a two-year-old, including the Listed Welcome Stakes, returning three sixth placings. She had another two runs in August and September last year for another sixth and a fifth placing.

“It’s a credit to Go Racing who have just let me be patient with her,” Carston said.

“Everything just came up a bit too soon for her in the spring so they let me put her in the paddock and she strengthened up and now, hopefully, if she continues on her way, they’re going to reap the rewards.”

Carston said that the daughter of Waikato Stud-based sire Super Seth, would be aimed towards the two remaining legs of NZB Southern Filly of the Year Series, the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes at Riccarton on April 12, and the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m) on April 26, with the Listed Liqourland Gore Guineas (1335m) on February 2 her likely next start.

Carston previously trained Miss Federer to claim the coveted Southern Series title in the 2019-20 season and Go Racing also claimed the series with Atishu in the 2020-21 season, when she was trained by Stephen Marsh.

“I’m expecting her to take massive improvement from yesterday’s win,” Carston said.

“At this stage she’ll probably go to the Gore Guineas, so long as she comes through the run all right.

“It’s exciting to have another good horse for Go Racing and it’s always rewarding when you think they’re quite smart and then they win like that, it was very good result.”

Carston also confirmed that he intends to start Miss Ziggy in the $1 million TAB Karaka Millions 2YO at Ellerslie on January 25.

The daughter of Brazen Beau is thirteenth on the conditional order of entry for the race following her fifth placing at Ellerslie last Sunday.

“She’s pulled up really well,” he said. “She licked the bin clean on Sunday night and she’s happy as.

“I thought she went really good it was her first time that way round and she’ll take improvement from having that experience.

“She’s in the field and obviously I’ll let her tell me how she comes through the next ten days but at this stage all is well so we will press on.

“We’ve got Sam Spratt engaged for the race and I think she’ll really suit her.”
