Riccarton based trainer Andrew Carston could not be happier with the performance of Miss Ziggy who finished third in the TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday night.
Ridden by Sam Spratt, the daughter of Brazen Beau defied her odds of $86 with the performance of her fledgling career.
“She was outstanding, she ran third, but it feels like she won,” he said. “She raced out of her skin and I’m so proud of our whole team that we got her to the Karaka Millions.”
Carston said he felt the result reflected not only on his team but the wider South Island racing industry.
“We were really happy with her going into it, but she was the rank outsider,” he said.
“It proves that it can be done from the South Island. A lot of people seem to think that we’re on another planet down there, but we showed that it can be done.”
Carston purchased Miss Ziggy for $250,000 out of South Island vendors Inglewood Stud’s 2024 NZB Book 1 draft, who also sold second placed Vega For Luck, for client Glenn Ritchie who was on-course at Ellerslie to watch his charge.
“She’s the first horse that I’ve purchased for Glenn, and it was great to have him there experience it all and to have her run a place,” he said.
Carston said that Miss Ziggy would now have a 10 day break in the North Island before he reassesses what to do next with her.
