Riccarton-based trainer Andrew Carston gave full credit to his staff following the win of Brusset in the $18,500 Auto Funds O’Connor Richmond (2000m) maiden at Gore on Sunday.
“I have to thank my staff as I’ve been away and they’ve done all the work leading into today,” he said.
Carston spent the majority of last week in Auckland, attending the Karaka Millions race meeting with Miss Ziggy who finished third in the two-year-old feature and then the Karaka Yearling Sales.
Carston also praised the ride of stable apprentice Yogesh Atchamah who settled Brusett handy on the rails and timed his run to perfection, he saved ground coming around just one runner before storming home to win by three-quarters of a length on the line.
“It was an outstanding ride,” he said. “One of those that you could take to apprentice school to show them what to do.”
A four-year-old daughter of Reliable Man, Brusset began her career with Lisa Latta in Palmerston North but has been with Carston, who also owns her, since January last year in which time she had three placings in fourteen starts, the last being a second placing Canterbury at her previous appearance.
“The owner has a lot of patience,” he quipped. “It’s probably just been the right time to step her up in ground.
“It was a really good result and there was good stake money down here today too.”
Carston was also happy with the performance of Genieinabottle who finished third in the Hokonui Suzuki/ Advance Agriculture (1335m) with Ayush Mudhoo on board.
“She was super too, I think she is close to a win too,” he said.
The Carston team will be back in action their home track of Riccarton for the Banks Peninsula RC meeting on Wednesday.
