It was a day of mixed emotions for trainer Andrew Carston at Ashburton Raceway on Wednesday.
Sunday marked the two-year anniversary of Carston’s former apprentice Megan Taylor’s death.
Seven Twenty cruises to victory at Ashburton.
Taylor was tragically killed in a race fall at Ashburton.
“We think of Megan every day, but it hits a bit harder at this time of year,” Carston said. “She was a talented rider and an awesome person who is greatly missed.”
Carston sponsored race two on Wednesday’s program, the Carston Racing Remembering Megan (1400m).
Carston also picked up a winner on the day with Seven Twenty winning the Robinson Racing/Yong Chew Memorial (1400m).
Seven twenty jumped well from barrier ten with Kylie Williams on board, taking the lead from the 1100m mark, from there she held the lead to win by three-quarters of a length on the line.
It was the six-year-old mare’s fifth career win for owners Terry, Jane & Connor Lines, Shaun, Emma and Harrison Clotworthy.
“She’s been a great old war horse,” Carston said. “I was pretty confident coming into today and it was nice to get another win for her connections who have been great supporters of the stable.
Williams also took home the $500 prize, also sponsored by Carston Racing for the most successful South Island based jockey on the day, having won on Seven Twenty and placed on Morus in race six.
“It was great for Kylie, who the stable has a great association with to take home the prize in Megan’s honour.” Carston said.
Bred by Narendra Balia and his Family Trust, Seven Twenty is by Power out of the winning Commands mare Ma Belle Ami.
